Although I would disagree with your assumption that there is less tolerance or more small mindedness in small towns than in cities, I still find this the best analysis I’ve read of the situation.

And your statement “that the Democratic Party might not have much respect for their most cherished rights” is on target. Obama was dismissive of not only those in small towns, but those who belong to any religion, those who own a gun, as well as anyone who can see a difference between legal and illegal immigration.

Thanks for your comment, Karen! I know small town and rural America are as diverse in their thinking as anybody in a city, I live far enough out in the boonies to have observed them vote against their own best interests time and time again. All for some ridiculous distraction that’s not a real issue and never will be. The city people I’ve known are just as easily sold by propaganda and clever marketing.

I’ve also noted through the years that some of the most progressive rural people are a lot like young people in general, in that they mean well but they don’t often vote. People who vote are the ones who decide the races. People who don’t vote have not much room for complaining.

Early voting for the May 6th primary started today (our family will vote Saturday) here in NC. News reports show big turnout, new registrations are heavy as well, 2-to-1 Democratic with ~1,250,000 Independents thrown in for good measure. We could actually go blue this year, and Diebold got kicked out. We do paper ballots now… §;o)
