John Grisham Steps On Iowa Republicans’ Toes

September 22nd, 2007

In an interview this past Thursday with the Des Moines Register newspaper, best-selling author John Grisham made more news with his entrance onto the political stage than with his new book, scheduled for release Monday [September 24].

Grisham slams war, tells book’s Iowa ties appeared in Friday’s Register, featuring scant information about the book and lots of quotes about his political opinions.

The book, Playing for Pizza, is about a football quarterback from Iowa who tries to revive his career by playing in Italy. The politics is far more interesting, at least to the editors of the newspaper. On Sunday Grisham will be hosting an event for Democratic Presidential candidate and New York Senator Hillary Clinton near Charlottesville, Virginia. His opinions of the current administration in D.C. are pretty colorful, making for a fun read. The pick of the litter:

“I’ve always thought that they were bad people with evil intent – and all that, it’s playing out now,” he said. “You can’t hardly look at any aspect of the government in the seven years so far that’s been run properly.”

The Register dutifully attempted to get White House response, but was instead foisted off to the Republican National Committee for a defense. Which is in itself positively hilarious for the sheer audacity of its asserted falsehoods:

“President Bush’s aggressive prosecution of the war on terror has kept America safe,” Taylor said. “His fiscal policies have grown our economy and he has upheld America’s position as leader of the free world.”

Readers of the Register seem to agree, though why anyone would believe such a fairy tale is truly a mystery. Do check out the comments to the article – they’re priceless!
